Seeking safety and comfort in the shade of a rocky outcrop as a silent hunter stalks the late evening desert. The Oviraptor will wait until the safety of full darkness before seeking out the rest of her flock.
This painting evolved from a warmup sketch over a year ago. I traded the generic ornithopod to a crested Oviraptor, which I found more visually challenging and an opportunity to render it in a way that wasn’t as ugly or awkward-looking as many interpretations. The therapod predator in the background is left intentionally vague and undefined threat stalking the skyline.
