I’ve always been fascinated by Vultures, and not just for their goth aesthetic. Like many scavengers, they’re unfairly maligned and regarded suspiciously as omens of death. But they are essential to the health of their particular ecosystems, consuming decaying remains and preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
The Bearded Vulture particularly captured my dark heart. While most other species of vultures feed on the flesh of fresh carcasses, this species has specifically adapted to feed on the skeletal remains. The strong stomach acids dissolve the calcium in bones. When too large to swallow whole, the birds will carry the bone high into the sky, dropping it from a great height to break it open so they can return to feed on the marrow. Inspiring!
